PREGNANCY YOGA
What is yoga?
The word yoga means “union” and it is an ancient system of harmonising and uniting body, mind and spirit. Each class consists of a series of movements known as postures that in pregnancy are performed slowly and meditatively with awareness of the breath. Classes will also include breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation as well as preparation for labour.
The benefits of Yoga for Pregnant Ladies
· Improves sense of mental and physical well being by optimising physical health and calming the mind
· Gentle stretching will tone the muscles without straining them
· Breathing exercises help to boost energy levels and reduce fatigue
· Relaxation will help improve the quality of sleep which in turn helps to reduce stress levels and anxiety
· Practising positions for labour including optimal foetal positioning will help prepare the body for the birth
· Breathing practices reduce physical and mental tension and if practised during labour will help to cope with pain
Other points
· Suitable for complete beginners and for those who have an established yoga practice
· Practising yoga throughout pregnancy DOES NOT guarantee a quick and easy delivery but it does promote acceptance and helps us to go with the flow.
